Artist’s Process
Kaia has a visceral process where emotion and ideas move to the canvas without a plan. Painting becomes an act of catharsis and exploration, where shapes, colors, and figures appear, only to get highlighted or subsumed based entirely on intuition and instinct. Her work is a form of unfettered discovery.
To achieve this, she uses various tools to paint—brushes, palette knives, repurposed items, and her own hands. Layering and scraping away is critical to her work. There are times when background and foreground become blurred, when an image covers an image—a destruction of what came before, but also a way to keep something sacred and close.
Ultimately, the tension between the surface and what lies beneath reflects her deep interest in the complexities of identity, the cycle of creation and destruction, and the duality of strength and weakness.
Each has a story, depth and soul.
Kaia’s paintings are dynamic and active. They are intended to be experienced as questions rather than answers. Her aim is to bring beauty into existence, inspire reflection, and to accept that we- and the universe- will never be wholly understood.
